Acclaimed actress and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph is no stranger to the limelight. In fact, Ralph who will serve as face of the 6th Annual Leimert Park Village Book Fair as its official ambassador embraces the spotlight like no one outside of a diva can. Wearing the diva card is something Ralph does perhaps better than anyone else.
Best known for her Tony Award-nominated role of Deena Jones in the hit Broadway play, “Dreamgirls,” Ralph brings her diva flair to the main stage of this year’s Leimert Park Village Book Fair to share her penned autobiography, “Redefining Diva: Life Lessons from the Original Dreamgirl.”
Her literary work notwithstanding, there is no real way to define the immense multi-talents of Ralph, a veteran stage (Thoroughly Modern Millie)and film actress (The Mighty Quinn, The Distinguished Gentleman, White Man’s Burden) who has enjoyed commercial success as a songstress as well. However, Ralph’s celebrity appeal goes beyond the superficiality of an image.
Besides supporting numerous charitable organizations, Ralph is the founder of The DIVA (Divinely Inspired Victoriously AWARE) Foundation, which raises money and promotes awareness of HIV/AIDS through the arts. Ralph is also the creative mastermind behind the touring one-woman stage play, “Sometimes I Cry,” a show which focuses on the lives of women affected by HIV.
